In its attacks on homosexuality and the “militant homosexual political agenda,” the Oregon Citizens Alliance loves to try to horrify the public with the details of alleged homosexual practices. Although the OCA claims that it's not trying to control private sexual behavior, it's not the “gay lobby” but the OCA itself that loves to smear sex in the face of the public. All of the alleged repugnant homosexual behaviors are also repugnant heterosexual behaviors, as the fine print in the OCA literature shows. Note that 36% of heterosexual (“straight”) men have engaged in anal sex and 20% have engaged in oral-anal sex (“rimming”), according to the OCA.
These figures from OCA literature show that 87% to 95% of the men engaging in in eight of these ten sexual behaviors are straight. For the other two fringe behaviors, 70% and 74% are straight. The average for all the behaviors is 90% straight. If the OCA believes that these behaviors are repugnant and immoral, why is it attacking gay men and lesbians for them? Wouldn't it make more sense for the OCA to begin by attacking straights—the part of the population where the OCA's own statistics show that 90% of the repugnant behavior occurs? Why are lesbian behaviors not even mentioned? (Lesbians have a much lower incidence of venereal disease than heterosexual women.)
* One wonders why the OCA left out other predominantly heterosexual (“straight”) behaviors such as wife-beating, date rape, oral sex, premarital and extramarital sex (wife swapping, adultery), prostitution, child molestation, nonmissionary-position sex, and so on. A woman is battered every 12 seconds (2.6 million batterings per year), and a woman is raped every minute in the United States [Department of Justice estimate]. Others estimate three to four million batterings per year [Surgeon General, May 1989]. One in four girls and one in seven boys is sexually assaulted by age 19 [Sexual Assault Center, Harvard U. Hospital, Seattle]. Fifty percent of married women experience domestic violence, and 70 percent of children are abused [Bowker, 1988]. By age 15, more than 25% of teenagers are sexually active, and almost half of eleventh graders have had sex at least once [AIDS-Proofing Your Kids, 1992]. Adultery and divorce are rampant. Does the OCA care?
† The straight/gay ratio is even greater today, because these are pre-AIDS (1983) figures, and safer sex is now much more widely practiced by gay men than by straights.
